Emergency Procedure

If you need to report an emergency to us such as injured or escaped livestock or damaged infrastructure please follow this procedure:

  1. Call the office on 01256 381190.
  2. If no one answers, wait for the answering message which will detail the name and mobile number of the member of staff who is currently on call.
  3. Phone the on-call member of staff who will then respond accordingly.

NOTES:

  • Please do not phone a member of staff directly unless you know they are on-call.

  • If you are unsure if a particular situation qualifies as an emergency then please phone the on-call member of staff anyway so that they can make the decision on how to proceed.

  • Most importantly of all – please do not report injuries or sick animals via the blog alone – always call the emergency on-call contact.

    Thank you!

4 New Forest ponies on site from today 3rd Nov

The MoD have kindly agreed to HIWWT undertaking a trial of pony grazing on Long Valley, Brock's Hill.

Mixed grazing with cattle and ponies should improve the sward for wildlife as they graze differently and ponies offer other advantages like grazing more gorse and shrub than cattle, being non-ruminants etc. Also we believe that ponies should be less resource intensive for us as they aren't covered by the TB testing regime.

We have put out 4 New Forest ponies today and 4 more will join them soon.

If you are interested I can email you a checklist giving details of some of the different aspects to checking ponies. Please email me: david.boddy@hiwwt.org.uk

Also Jayne Chapman, HIWWT's Snr Nature Recovery Manager for Central Area, who just happens to be an expert on pony grazing for conservation has agreed to provide a short course at our Greywell Moors reserve for lookers checking ponies. We have chosen Greywell as the Exmoor ponies there are very easy to find, we will have to see how easy the Long Valley ones prove to be! A provisional date for that is Fri 18th Nov., TBC. Please email me if you are interested.

Thanks for your help with checking the livestock - it's much appreciated.
