A group of five ponies were waiting just beyond the cattle grid when I arrived at 1000 today. Megan and her foal were dozing in the sun deeper in the gorse toward the racecourse with the remaining pony standing guard nearby. The foal dreamed on with twitching limbs while Megan woke and sat up when she realised I was there.
None of the ponies were grazing, they were just standing (or lying) in the sun recovering from the rain they had to endure yesterday and over night. All appear well though a couple were bothered by flies (on the muzzle but not around the eyes).
I made a morning visit because, according to the maps, the land is closed from noon until 5.30 every afternoon until the 26th for the flying display as it is in the 'safety zone'. Some years ago they had an ex-Gurkha at the gate who reluctantly escorted me around to see the cattle to make sure I didn't settle myself on Brock's Hill to watch. It didn't look as if there had been a guard there yesterday. There were a number of noisy displays I could hear from home yesterday afternoon that I hope didn't upset the ponies.
